An algal bloom is a rapid and noticeable increase in the amount of algae in a body of water. Algae, sometimes called phytoplankton, are microscopic, single-celled plants that are the basis of aquatic ecosystems. algal blooms occur naturally, but increased inputs of nitrogen or phosphorous to a body of water can cause massive blooms that harm the ecosystem.
