An ecological health is a metaphor used to invoke ideas about the integrity, complexity, and autonomy of an ecosystem (Norton 1991). A definition of ecosystem health as an actual entity with specific scale has not been resolved; the terms are useful because they facilitate "a set of rules of thumb, which can be thought of analogically, for analyzing what is going wrong when environing (sic) systems undergo rapid change".
