An Abatement describes the reducing the degree or intensity of, or eliminating, pollution.

The term abatement may also refer to any one of the following:

  • the process or state of being abated, or a reduction, decrease, alleviation or mitigation
  • Abatement of debts and legacies, a common law doctrine of wills that states that if the assests of a deceased person are insufficient to satisfy their creditors, the former's debts are abated proportionally, and the latter must accept a dividend
  • Abatement in pleading (or plea in abatement), a legal defense based on procedural or technical issues in a criminal or civil case
  • Abatement (or rebatement), an augmentation to a shield or coat of arms imposed by royal decree or heraldic authority for misconduct
  • Asbesos abatement, the removal of asbestos in a structure
  • Bird abatement (or bird control)
  • Dust abatement, the process of inhibiting the creation of excess soil dust
  • Graffiti abatement, an effort or program enacted by various parties in order to reduce or eliminate graffiti vandalism
  • Marginal abatement cost curve (or MAC curve), a set of tools and options available to an economy in order to understand and reduce pollution
  • Noise control (noise mitigation, noise abatement), a set of methods or strategies used in order to reduce noise pollution
  • Nuisance abatement, an effort or program enacted by various parties in order to improve the quality of life and resolve safety issues within neighborhoods
  • Tax holiday (tax abatement, tax subsidy, tax reduction), a temporary reduction or elimination of a tax, sometimes used as an incentive by a governement in order to encourage business investment
