The Environmental Glossary. Letter R +++ Popular Articles: 'Range', 'Renewable energy', 'Range of tolerance'

The term random disposition in the environmental context could be interpreted in various ways, as it's not a standard or commonly used environmental science term. However, it could relate to the random allocation or dispersal of environmental resources, pollutants, or even the distribution of species within a given habitat. Below, I'll explore how this concept might apply across a few environmental themes:

Random error is Variations of repeated measurements that are random in nature and not predictable individually.

A Random Error is an unplanned deviation of an observed value from the true value that occurs produced by unpredictable and unknown sources of variation, e.g., due to fluctuations in conditions such as temperature, mechanical vibrations, reading error, etc.; also known as experimental error.

A Random Sample is a subsection of a population selected in such a way that each unit of the population has the same chance of being selected.

A randomization is the process of imposing an element of chance on the selection of a sample.

A Range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values of a set of values. When the number of values is small (i.e., eight or less), the range is a relatively sensitive (efficient) measure of variability. As the number of values increases above eight, the efficiency of the range (as an estimator of the variability) decreases rapidly. The range, or difference between two paired values, is of particular importance in air pollution measurement, since in many situations duplicate measurements are performed as part of the quality assurance program.

Range of tolerance is the range of chemical and physical conditions that must be maintained for populations of a particular species to stay alive and grow, develop, and function normally.

A Rangeland is Land, mostly grasslands, whose plants can provide food (i.e., forage) for grazing or browsing animals.

A Ranked Set Sampling is a specimen site-selection process wherein expert judgment or an auxiliary measurement method is used, in combination with simple random specimen collection, to determine which locations in the field should be selected.

A ranking member is the lead member of a Congressional committee from the minority party, usually chosen on the basis of seniority.
