The Synthesis describes the combination of two or more parts, whether by design or by natural processes. Furthermore, it may imply being prepared or made artificially, in contrast to naturally. The resulting product is called 'Synthetic'.

Synthetic lubricant is a chemically engineered substance created from synthetic compounds rather than crude oil, which is traditionally used in conventional lubricants. A Synthetic natural gas (SNG) is a manufactured product chemically similar in most respects to natural gas, resulting from the conversion or reforming of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Spatial arrangement of the selected resource units is not always strictly systematic, but the systematic grid is an important aspect of the design.
