Dilating does not have a direct translation in environmental terminology, but in the context of environmental science, it could be interpreted metaphorically to describe processes that expand or increase in scope. A Diluent is any liquid or solid material used to dilute or carry an active ingredient.

A Dilution Ratio is the relationship between the volume of water in a stream and the volume of incoming water. It affects the ability of the stream to assimilate waste.
