An algal bloom is a rapid and noticeable increase in the amount of Algae in a body of water. Algae, sometimes called phytoplankton, are microscopic, single-celled plants that are the basis of aquaticecosystems.

Algal blooms occur naturally, but increased inputs of nitrogen or phosphorous to a body of water can cause massive blooms that harm the ecosystem. See also eutrophication.
