- Equal-area: An equal-area (equivalent) projection is One of a class of map projections that preserves area relationships between the map and the surface of the Earth. On an equal-area projection, two areas that are equal on the surface of the Earth will also be equal on the map. A projection cannot be both conformal and equal-area.
