A Metropolitan Area (MA) is the US Census defines a MA as a Core area containing a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities that have a high degree of economic and social integration with that core. Metropolitan areas are defined in terms of entire counties (except in New England, where towns are used) and contain a mix of land uses, ranging from the densest urban core to suburban landscapes to deserts, farms, and forests.
