Epithelial lining fluid

Epithelial lining fluid (ELF) is the thin layer of fluid that covers the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract. It plays a crucial role in the lung's defense mechanism against environmental pollutants and pathogens. The ELF contains various Antimicrobial peptides, immune cells, and antibodies that help in trapping and neutralizing harmful substances inhaled from the environment. Its composition and volume can be affected by exposure to air pollutants, smoking, and respiratory diseases, impacting its ability to protect the lungs.
